Feeding Programme Case Study - George & Teresah

These two siblings are orphans and live with their grandfather.  He is elderly and unable to take good care of them because he can’t earn a regular income.  They came to our attention because they never brought lunch to school.  When our social workers visited, they saw that this was a very needy family, living in a very primitive hut and found both the children suffering from Jiggers.

Treating feet affected by jiggers

A jigger is a small parasitic flea that burrows into the skin of children with serious malnutrition before laying eggs. They generally attack feet or hands and cause intense itching, followed by inflammation and acute pain.  At this stage it can be too painful to move around or walk to school. The cure is to cut them out and keep the wounds clean.

Our team began by dealing with jiggers and then providing them with a hot daily meal at our Kiabarikiri centre.  George and Teresah learned how to take care of their personal hygiene and their health improved rapidly.  KCC provided them with new school uniforms and they started to enjoy learning in school.  Today, they are healthy, cheerful children with a bright future ahead of them.
